Dear NEARI Members,
I am excited to announce my candidacy for the position of NEA Director. As a dedicated advocate for educators and public education, I bring extensive leadership experience, a collaborative spirit, and a deep commitment to our members. I am eager to serve in this role during a time when public education faces significant challenges. Now, more than ever, we must unite to protect the union values and institutions that support our educators, students, and communities.
Over the past decade, I have served in a variety of leadership roles at both the local and state levels. My experience includes serving as NEARI Assistant Treasurer, NEARI Regional Vice President, and NEA/SK Co-President and President. Additionally, I have been a member of the NEARI RIPACE Committee since 2018. During this time, I have attended numerous leadership conferences at both local and national levels.
I am proud to be a member of the Class of 2024 Leadership for the Future program, which develops leaders to "become the change they wish to see" in Rhode Island. This experience has strengthened my ability to drive positive change, build diverse connections, and empower others.
Recently, I served as the NEARI Education Summer Coordinator, where I worked with other members to organize door-knocking campaigns, member recruitment efforts, and outreach to ESP members. These efforts were instrumental in South Kingstown’s successful $150 million bond campaign to build a new high school. This past year, I also helped NEARI secure $15,000 in grant funding to implement NEA Micro-credentials across Rhode Island, transforming professional development opportunities for our members.
As NEARI Director, I will prioritize member engagement, advocate for policies that benefit public education, and work tirelessly to support our shared goals.
It would be an honor to serve as your NEARI Director.
In Solidarity,
Brian Nelson, Ed.D.
